In the days leading up to the game, the fans had already exchanged blows. On Saturday, there was a lot of tension on the field since Argentina needed to win in order to avoid an embarrassing World Cup exit.

Following Poland’s 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia earlier that day, Mexico also needed to earn all three points to give themselves a chance to go into the knockout rounds.

After terrible confrontations broke out on the streets of Qatar in the middle of the week, tensions between the two groups of supporters flared up once more in the stands. Images showed people who were sat next to one another letting their emotions get the best of them and fighting.

Despite the poor quality of the football played on the field, the stadium apparently had one of the finest atmospheres at the World Cup.

The way their team is performing in what is probably Lionel Messi‘s final World Cup has particularly incensed Argentina fans.

The South American team lost to Saudi Arabia 2-1 earlier this week in one of the competition’s most devastating defeats in its history, giving them a chance to advance out of the group.

In Al Bidda Park in Doha, one of Fifa’s fan zones in Qatar, fans encountered Mexico supporters on Wednesday night, and the setback was undoubtedly still fresh in their thoughts.

Fights reportedly broke out after “f*** Messi” chants were heard coming from the Mexico camp, resulting in a few minor injuries.
