A quarterback room in need of experience will benefit from the journeyman quarterback.
The 49ers are bolstering their quarterback room with depth now that Jimmy Garoppolo is sidelined for the year.
On Tuesday, San Francisco revealed that it had hired veteran Josh Johnson to replace Brock Purdy.
For over half of the league's teams, Johnson has played.
In 2012, 2014, and 2020, he was a member of the 49ers, but he hasn't played for the team since.
Throughout his three years in the league, Johnson only participated in 37 games, including 26 of them.
Johnson has completed 85 passes in 11 games since the year 2012.
Due to major injuries, Trey Lance and Garoppolo are both out.
Johnson appears to be familiar enough with the offensive scheme to serve as the young quarterback's primary back-up.
